In short
Tech sales is a strong direction for medical sellers who want a commercial career connected to software and AI while using complex-product and customer skills. Healthcare or life sciences software can be a bridge to buyers you already understand. Some software roles offer different travel or working patterns, but compare the actual role. Medical sales remains attractive for people who prefer clinical products and field-based work.

What are the different kinds of medical sales?
Medical sales is several careers. Medical device sellers support products used in hospitals and clinics, and some roles involve being present in procedures. Pharmaceutical sellers educate prescribers about medicines under strict rules. Diagnostics sellers work with labs and testing products. Healthcare software sellers sell technology to hospitals, clinics, or life sciences companies.
Schedules differ widely. Some device roles involve early mornings and on-call time, while many pharmaceutical and diagnostics roles follow a regular territory plan. Ask about the actual schedule instead of assuming.
Can medical sales experience transfer to software?
Yes, especially at companies that sell software to healthcare and life sciences. The fit depends on which medical background you have. Device and diagnostics sellers often understand clinical workflows and hospital buying committees, which can matter to vendors selling software to providers. Pharmaceutical sellers often understand life sciences field teams and commercial rules, which can matter to vendors selling software to drug and biotech companies. These are different buyers, so do not assume one background fits both.
Veeva's CRM product page is one example of software built for life sciences commercial teams. It is a product example only. It does not suggest that medical device sellers are guaranteed roles there, and it reflects no connection to Tech Sales House.
Requirements are role-specific. Some roles require clinical knowledge, data or security knowledge, or implementation experience. Read each post carefully.
Which tech role fits a medical seller?
Experienced medical sellers with full-cycle deals and comparable deal sizes may qualify for direct AE roles, especially in healthcare software. A senior medical seller does not automatically need to start as an SDR. Those with less closing ownership may start in SDR, BDR, or account management roles. Our guide to switching from sales covers how to map your experience.
What transfers, what changes, and what you prefer
Choose a route from the work you owned and the customer setting you enjoy. An experienced closer can explore suitable AE roles; a seller who managed ongoing commercial relationships can compare account work. SDR is one possible route, not a compulsory restart.

What are the different kinds of tech sales roles?
Tech sales is mostly business-to-business, or B2B. SDRs and BDRs create pipeline by booking first meetings. Account executives, or AEs, close deals. Sales engineers support the technical side of a sale, and the BLS describes sales engineers as a distinct technical occupation. Customer success managers help customers get value after the sale. Our role comparison explains these roles.
How do medical sales and tech sales compare?
The table gives a general comparison. Pay, travel, and requirements vary by company and role, and the BLS category cited here does not isolate medical sales pay from other sales roles. The BLS groups many technical sellers under wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, which covers many sectors beyond medical.
| Factor | Medical sales (common) | Tech sales (common) |
|---|---|---|
| Buyers | Medical sales (common)Clinicians, hospitals, and purchasing committees | Tech sales (common)Business teams, IT, operations, and finance |
| Product proof | Medical sales (common)Clinical evidence and outcomes | Tech sales (common)Business results and product demos |
| Pay model | Medical sales (common)Base plus commission or bonus | Tech sales (common)Base plus commission |
| Travel | Medical sales (common)Often field-based | Tech sales (common)Varies, from remote to field |
| Learning | Medical sales (common)Clinical and regulatory knowledge | Tech sales (common)Software, data, and AI knowledge |
| Access | Medical sales (common)Hospital access rules can limit visits | Tech sales (common)Mostly meetings and video calls |
| Entry barriers | Medical sales (common)Some roles prefer clinical or sales experience | Tech sales (common)Varies by role and level |
| Risks | Medical sales (common)Territory changes and product approvals | Tech sales (common)Quota pressure and company changes |
Does one pay more or offer more stability?
Neither one pays more in every case, and neither is automatically more stable. Medical companies can restructure territories, and software companies can change quotas or reduce teams. Compare real offers at the same level, using realistic first-year pay instead of OTE alone.
OTE, or on-target earnings, is base salary plus commission at 100% of quota, and most new hires start with a ramp, a training period with adjusted targets. Subtract any expenses you would pay, add benefits, and note commission timing. Our salary guide and offer guide explain these terms.
Which path fits your preferences?
Use the matrix below to think about your priorities.
| If you prefer | Leans toward |
|---|---|
| Learning how healthcare products are used in care | Leans towardMedical devices or diagnostics, depending on the role |
| Learning software, data, and AI | Leans towardTech sales |
| Using healthcare knowledge with technology | Leans towardHealthcare software |
| Less travel, where the role allows it | Leans towardSome tech roles, though field roles exist |
| Structured territory plans | Leans towardPharmaceutical or some device roles |
What work sample could show your thinking?
Choose the correct buyer first: a provider workflow for hospital or clinic experience, or a life sciences commercial workflow for pharmaceutical experience. Read one public software product page, describe its users, and draw a simple fictional process map. Note one possible need, three discovery questions, and what requires technical verification.
Use only public information and general experience, never patient or customer data. The sample should show buyer reasoning without inventing product results.
Interview template, using only true facts: “In [medical role], I learned [product type] and worked with [actual stakeholder roles]. I owned [real deal or account tasks], with [supported result]. I want to move into software because [genuine reason]. I am learning [specific workflow or product topic] and checking how implementation and data needs affect this buyer.”
This connects product learning, decision coordination, and commercial evidence. Practice with the AE interview guide or account manager guide for the work you intend to pursue.
What should you ask before deciding?
Ask how quota and ramp work, how many reps hit target last year, what travel is expected, and what technical knowledge the role needs. Check whether your current company has non-compete terms. Decide after you have a real offer to compare.

Frequently asked questions
These answers cover common questions about medical and tech sales.
Is medical sales harder to get into than tech sales?
It depends on the role. Some medical roles prefer clinical or proven sales experience, and some tech roles have strict requirements too.
Can a medical device rep become a software AE?
Yes, if they have comparable full-cycle deal experience and the employer's requirements match. Healthcare software is one route worth investigating.
Do tech sales roles involve less travel?
Some do, and field tech roles with regular travel also exist. Check travel expectations in each job post.
Is pharmaceutical sales the same as medical device sales?
No. Pharmaceutical sellers educate prescribers about medicines, while device sellers support products used in clinical care and sometimes procedures.
Will I need technical skills for healthcare software?
Some roles need data, security, or implementation knowledge. Many sales roles focus on product and buyer knowledge instead.
