In short
An SMB account executive helps small and midsize businesses buy technology. To become one, match your real sales experience to the employer's needs and show which parts of a deal you can own. That may include finding buyers, discovery, demos, objections, and closing. The best entry path depends on your experience.

What does an SMB account executive do?
SMB stands for small and midsize businesses. An account executive, or AE, is the seller who owns a deal and closes it. An SMB AE does that for smaller customers, often across many deals at the same time.
Two public postings show what the job can involve. GitLab's SMB New Business AE posting, open to people in the United States and Canada, focuses on winning new customers. The seller works inbound leads, does outbound outreach, runs the sale from first contact to close, and is measured on new customer count and booked annual recurring revenue. Annual recurring revenue, or ARR, is the yearly value of a subscription.
KnowBe4's SMB AE posting, a hybrid role in Clearwater, Florida, also describes the full sale from prospecting to closing new customers. It adds monthly quotas, forecasting, and keeping careful records of calls, demos, and notes. A quota is your personal sales target.
These are two employers' descriptions, not rules for every company. If you are still deciding which customer size fits you, our guide to enterprise, mid-market, and SMB sales compares the segments. This guide is about getting hired once SMB is your target.
How is an SMB AE different from an SDR?
A sales development rep, or SDR, usually finds and qualifies buyers and books meetings. An SMB AE often does some of that too, then keeps going: discovery, demo, pricing talks, and the signed deal. AE targets often include closed revenue, along with pipeline and activity goals.
Our guide to SDR, BDR, and AE roles explains the basic jobs. If you are an SDR now, SDR to AE covers general readiness for the move. The sections below focus on what an SMB hiring team will want to see.
What does an SMB sales cycle look like?
A sales cycle is the set of steps from first research to a signed deal. Salesforce's sales cycle guide lists research, prospecting, qualifying and discovery, a demo or presentation, handling objections, a proposal and negotiation, and the close. It notes that a small business may decide right after a good demo, while a more complex sale needs a formal proposal and more approvals.
| Step | What an SMB AE often does | Evidence you can show |
|---|---|---|
| Research and prospecting | What an SMB AE often doesFinds likely buyers and reaches out | Evidence you can showYour own outreach and the replies it earned |
| Discovery | What an SMB AE often doesLearns the problem, its cost, and who decides | Evidence you can showCall notes that show real questions and follow-up |
| Demo | What an SMB AE often doesShows only the parts that fit the problem | Evidence you can showA demo you gave, or a practice demo on a public product |
| Objections | What an SMB AE often doesAnswers price, timing, and fit concerns honestly | Evidence you can showA real concern you handled and what happened next |
| Close | What an SMB AE often doesAgrees terms and gets the signature | Evidence you can showDeals you personally closed, with the period and target |
There is no fixed number of days. Salesforce says the length depends on how complex the product is, the price, and how many people are involved. SMB deals are often shorter because fewer people decide, but that is a pattern, not a promise.
What do employers ask for in an SMB AE?
Requirements differ, and SMB does not always mean entry level. The GitLab posting asks for information technology experience gained through sales, technical consulting, customer success, marketing, or customer service, plus a record of outbound prospecting and winning business. Its application also asks about quota-carrying B2B new-business experience and owning a full sales cycle. B2B means selling to businesses.
KnowBe4 asks for a proven sales record and lists software sales to smaller businesses as a plus. The posting labels that experience a plus, so read it separately from the listed requirements. It does not mean the role is open to people with no sales results.
Read each posting line by line. Mark what you can prove, what you can partly show, and what you cannot show yet. That list tells you whether to apply now or build more evidence first.
Can I go straight into an SMB AE role?
Sometimes. Direct entry is more realistic when you have already owned full sales from first contact to signature and your record fits what the employer asks for. If your past work covered prospecting but not closing, an SDR or BDR role may be the better bridge. Neither choice is a step down.
| Background | What may transfer | What to show or close the gap on |
|---|---|---|
| Car sales | What may transferClosing, pace, and price talks | What to show or close the gap onDiscovery about needs and tradeoffs, not just inventory |
| Real estate | What may transferSeveral parties, follow-through, and long relationships | What to show or close the gap onSelling to a business buyer, not a household |
| Insurance | What may transferNeeds analysis and steady activity | What to show or close the gap onSay clearly whether you won new business or managed renewals |
| Other B2B sales | What may transferBusiness buyers, quotas, and full deals | What to show or close the gap onLearning a software product and how it is bought |
The table shows how some backgrounds can map to SMB AE work. These are skill matches to check, not proof that an employer will accept them. Our guide to switching from sales to tech sales and the car, real estate, and insurance guides go deeper on each move.
What readiness evidence counts if you are not an AE yet?
Supervised work counts when you describe it honestly. That can include running part of a discovery call, giving a demo while a manager watched, or writing a proposal an AE reviewed. Say what you did. Do not claim a closed deal you only supported.
When you share results, keep a clear record of the scope, the time period, and whether the result was yours or the team's. Only use a percentage if you can show the numbers behind it, such as deals won out of deals worked, from your own records.
How should your resume and LinkedIn show SMB readiness?
Lead with the parts of the full sale you owned, the type of buyer, and the target you carried. SMB hiring teams often look for steady activity and the ability to manage many deals, so show both volume and quality without inflating either.

How can I practice selling to a small business?
This exercise was created by Tech Sales House for practice. It is not an employer's test. Use only public information and a made-up buyer.
Step 1: Pick a software product with a public website. Write a short profile of a fictional small business that might buy it, such as a ten-person clinic or a local shop.
Step 2: Write five discovery questions. Cover the current process, what the problem costs, what has been tried, who decides, and when they want to decide.
Step 3: Plan a three-minute demo that shows only the features linked to the answers you expect. Practice it out loud and cut anything that does not connect to the buyer's problem.
Step 4: Outline one true deal story from your own work. Include the buyer, the problem, your actions, other people's parts, and the actual outcome. A lost deal can work if you explain what you learned.
What practice interview questions fit an SMB AE role?
These two questions were written by Tech Sales House for practice. They are not questions from any employer, and the example answers are practice samples, not scripts or real candidate stories. Our account executive interview questions guide has a longer practice set.
Practice question: How would you keep quality high while working many deals at once? Example practice answer: "If I had many open deals, I would start each day with the buyers whose next step or decision date is closest. I would update my CRM notes after every call. I would not skip discovery to save time, because I need the real problem before I can close well." This shows you can handle volume without losing deal quality.
Practice question: A small business owner says your price is too high. What do you do? Example practice answer: "If an owner said the price was too high, I would ask what budget limit they have and what they are comparing us to. I would then weigh the price against what the current problem costs them. Any change would stay within our approved scope and pricing." This shows you look for the real concern before offering a discount.
What gets in the way, and what is a realistic next step?
Common gaps are closing experience, software product knowledge, and a clear story about results. You can work on the last two while you are still employed. Closing experience usually comes from a role where you own the sale, which may be an SMB AE role or a bridge role first.
A realistic plan is to pick a short list of SMB AE postings that fit your evidence, finish the exercise above, and update your resume to match. Compare any offer carefully with our guide on how to evaluate a tech sales job offer, and see the tech sales salary guide for common pay terms.

Frequently asked questions
These answers cover common questions about becoming an SMB AE.
Is an SMB AE role entry level?
Not always. Some SMB roles ask for proven sales results or full-cycle experience. Check each posting.
Do I need software sales experience?
Some employers require it and some list it as a plus. Either way, you need to show that you can learn a product and explain its value.
Should I aim for mid-market next?
Only if you want deeper deals with more people involved. Many sellers grow within SMB, and employers decide who moves up.
