How to Become an Enterprise Account Executive in Tech Sales

In short

An enterprise account executive sells to large organizations where many people help make one buying decision. To become one, show that you have owned complex deals from start to signature, including executive conversations, a business case, and legal, security, and buying reviews. Large brand names alone do not prove you are ready.

What does an enterprise account executive do?

An enterprise AE owns sales to some of a company's largest customers. Tailscale's Enterprise AE posting, a remote role based near New York City, describes helping large clients evaluate, buy, and expand the product. The seller builds strategic account plans, works with security, engineering, and executive stakeholders, and handles sales involving several decision makers, procurement, security reviews, and legal negotiation.

Procurement is the buyer's purchasing team. A security review checks whether the product meets the buyer's safety rules. A strategic account plan is a written plan for one large customer that names the people, priorities, and possible growth.

If you are still choosing a segment, see our guide to enterprise, mid-market, and SMB sales. This guide is about proving you can run an enterprise buying process.

Why do enterprise buying steps take longer?

Salesforce's sales cycle guide says product complexity, price, and the number of people involved all affect how long a sale takes. It notes that in large companies, a purchasing team often negotiates price and the legal team reviews the terms. There is no fixed number of months. Each deal and buyer is different.

GitLab's MEDDPPICC page gives plain names to the facts enterprise sellers track. The table explains several of them in simple words.

Are associate enterprise roles a way in without experience?

An associate title does not tell you the entry requirements. GitLab's Enterprise AE job family shows several levels. Even its Associate Strategic AE role asks for proven B2B software sales success. The Strategic AE role adds experience selling into large organizations. Its Major AE roles ask for experience with highly complex organizations, consistent results against quota, and comfort presenting to executives.

This is one employer's job family, but it shows a useful point. An associate title can still expect real software sales results. Read what each level asks for before deciding where you fit.

What evidence shows you are ready for enterprise sales?

Enterprise hiring teams look for deals you ran from start to finish where many people were involved. Selling to a famous company is not the same thing. A small, simple deal with a large brand does not show enterprise skill. A complex deal with a lesser-known organization can.

Tailscale's posting, for example, asks for an established closing record, success selling technical software, complex multi-stakeholder sales, and strong account planning, discovery, and business case skills. A business case is a written argument for why the buyer should spend the money, usually tied to results they care about.

Strong evidence includes executive conversations you led, a business case you built, legal or security reviews you guided, and forecasts you called honestly. Explain what you did and what others, such as a sales engineer or lawyer, did.

Can I move into enterprise tech sales from another field?

It is possible in some cases, and it depends on the employer. If you sold complex deals to large organizations in another industry, such as through long reviews and many approvers, that buying-process skill can carry over. The usual gap is technical context. Learn how your target product works and who reviews it on the buyer's side. Our switching guide covers moves from other sales fields.

There is no automatic path from SDR straight to enterprise AE. If you lack full-cycle closing evidence, a role with narrower scope may be a more useful first step. Our SDR to AE guide, mid-market AE guide, and medical sales vs. tech sales guide can help you find a realistic step.

Level is a separate question. If you are weighing seniority, see our senior account executive guide.

How can I explain business value to senior buyers?

Start with a business goal the buyer can check. For practice, imagine a buyer wants less work held up by slow approvals. Ask how they track those delays today, who is affected, and what result would count as progress. Keep any estimate separate from a confirmed result, and ask the buyer to check your assumptions.

In a real deal story, explain how you connected the product to the buyer's goal. Name the facts you confirmed, the risks still open, and the next decision needed. Do not claim savings you did not measure. A short business summary should help each leader understand why the purchase matters to their own team.

How can I show sound judgment in an enterprise negotiation?

In your deal story, explain the buyer's priority and the terms you were allowed to discuss. A request may involve scope, rollout plans, payment timing, or contract terms. Describe how you worked with legal, finance, and technical teammates, then state what was agreed and what you personally owned.

For practice, explain the effect of a proposed change before offering it. A smaller scope may lower cost but leave a need unmet. A longer agreement may change both value and risk. Stay within approved terms, record the open steps, and update the forecast when the buyer's process changes.

How should you describe big deals on a resume and LinkedIn?

Respect confidentiality. Do not share customer names, contract terms, or prices that your employer or the customer has not made public. You can describe the industry, size, and number of groups involved instead.

Use money terms carefully. Bookings usually means the value of deals signed in a period. ARR is the yearly value of a subscription. TCV, or total contract value, is the value across the whole contract. Only quote a figure if you can verify it, say which measure it is, and make clear what part was yours.

Our tech sales resume guide and LinkedIn profile guide show how to keep this honest and clear.

How can I practice building an enterprise account plan?

This exercise was created by Tech Sales House for practice. It is not an employer's test. Use a public product and a fictional large company. Do not use private customer data.

Step 1: Pick a software product with a public website. Invent a large organization that might buy it and write its main business goal in one sentence.

Step 2: List the buyer roles you expect: users, technical reviewers, security, legal, purchasing, the economic buyer, and a possible champion.

Step 3: For each role, write one thing you still do not know.

Step 4: List the top three risks to the deal, the next step for each, and who owns it, either you, a teammate, or someone at the buyer.

What practice interview questions fit an enterprise AE role?

These two questions were written by Tech Sales House for practice. They are not questions from any employer, and the example answers are practice samples, not real candidate stories. Our account executive interview questions guide has a longer set.

Practice question: How would you get to the economic buyer if your contact is not senior? Example practice answer: "If my contact was not senior, I would work with them on a short business summary showing the result their leader cares about. I would ask them to introduce me to the person who approves the spend. In that meeting, I would confirm they are the decision maker." This shows you can reach the economic buyer by helping your contact, not going around them.

Practice question: Legal and purchasing ask for changes late in the deal. What do you do? Example practice answer: "If legal or purchasing asked for late changes, I would first clarify which terms they want changed and why. I would route the request to our legal team and offer only tradeoffs that are approved. I would write down open dependencies and update my forecast, without promising a close date." This shows you protect both the deal and your company's terms.

What gets in the way, and what is a realistic plan?

Common gaps are proof of complex deals, technical product knowledge, and executive conversations. Some of these take time in a role that offers them, such as mid-market or a senior AE seat. There is no fixed timeline.

A realistic plan is to compare your deal history with a few enterprise postings, finish the account plan exercise, and fix the gaps you can close now. Before accepting an offer, ask about the account list, team support, and quota, then use our guide on how to evaluate a tech sales job offer.

Frequently asked questions

These answers cover common questions about becoming an enterprise AE.

Do enterprise AEs need technical skills?

They need enough technical context to understand the buyer's reviews. Sales engineers often handle the deepest technical work.

Should I skip mid-market and go straight to enterprise?

Compare your actual deal history with the posting. A direct move may fit when the work already matches. If it does not, choose a role where you can build the missing experience.
